Vessels Overview

HiSeasNet provides connectivity to 20 seafaring vessels within the US Academic Research Fleet and the United States Antarctic Program.

Our general approach is to apply a standards-based installation based on available technology and budget constraints. A broad goal we have is for each system we install to have the ability to stream HD video ashore in real-time and to have a highly available link to shore, capable of 99% radio uptime. We are presently working with our agencies to determine deliverables that are financially practicable in order to achieve such goals.

Here is an at-a-glance overview of our fleet of installations. Ships with more than 40 berths tend to work at sea more frequently, with more personnel aboard. As a result, they tend to require more systems with higher throughput.

All Committed Information Rate (CIR) and Maximum Information Rate (MIR) units are in Kilobits Per Second (kbps).

When planning, one should plan for the CIR. MIR throughput typically only happens over a few seconds and should generally not be expected to last for very long.

Since most people tend to think in terms of MegaBytes, note that one MegaByte is 8192 kilobits.
